Dr. Larry Komer, MD, F.R.C.S.C.

Lawrence D. Komer, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Larry Komer is a well-known authority in obstetrics and gynecology who has conducted extensive research into issues relating to women's health. He is an active member of the consulting staff in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington, Ontario, where he also maintains a busy private practice. Recently appointed medical editor for the innovative journal, Obstetrics and Gynecology 2000, Dr. Komer is considered to be one of today's leading experts on menopause.

The founder and director of the Peak Performance Institute, an organization dedicated to "developing the mind, to improve performance," Dr. Komer is also co-creator with his wife, Joan, a self-esteem counselor, of the very popular Be Menopositive public information seminars held nationwide.  They are members of the Strategic Seminars group.

Their warm, engaging presentation of Be Menopositive offers just the right blend to provide important medical information, while recognizing the emotional and psychological impact of menopause. As a result of this positive, factual and innovative approach, the seminars have sparked national interest among media, health care providers, public health organizations and numerous women's groups.

Dr. Komer earned his medical degree from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University's School of Medicine and has held positions in the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada; the Ontario Medical Association, Section of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and is Past President of the Ontario Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Komer is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) and a member of the North American Menopause Society.

Dr. Komer is committed to improving the provision of health care for women through education and understanding of women's health issues.


Joan Komer, BA, B.Ed.

Joan Komer is a self-esteem counselor, and co-founder and president of  Peak Performance Institute in Burlington, Ontario. The organization was formed to design programs specially created to meet both physiological and psychological needs of individuals, using the principles of adult learning theory.

Together with her husband, Dr. Lawrence Komer, an obstetrician and gynecologist, Joan was instrumental in the development of the highly acclaimed public education seminar, Be Menopositive. Her skills as a research coordinator and teacher provide effective methods to facilitate a program which recognizes women's needs for accurate, timely information about menopause, while offering an in-depth look at issues affecting quality of life and self-esteem.

Joan graduated from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario with an Honours B.A. in Psychology and English, as well as a B.Ed specialty in Sociology and Counselling. She is a member of the North American Menopause Society and is also a certified self-esteem facilitator for both corporate and public programs. She has studied with
Jack Canfield, one of the co-authors of Chicken Soup for The Soul.

Her experience offers a unique combination of skills guaranteed to constructively impact women of all ages.

A popular speaker, Joan is dedicated to improving the lives of women experiencing the particular challenges of mid-life.
